According to the World Health Organization, oral diseases affect nearly 3.5 billion people. Before you let that statistic discourage you, it’s important to remember that tooth decay, gum disease, and the like are largely preventable with the right best practices in place. With this in mind, here are some helpful New Year’s Resolutions for a healthier smile!
1. Floss Every Day
Are you a part of the 33% of Americans who don’t floss every day? If so, then there’s no time like the present to start! Remember, brushing alone only cleans about 60% of the surface of your teeth. In order to prevent plaque buildup between your teeth and along your gumline, you need to floss each morning or evening as well.
2. Eat More Vegetables
At the beginning of the year, patients often focus on what they want to eliminate from their diet, like ice cream or soda. Sometimes, it’s more helpful to turn your attention to what you can add, like more vegetables! Celery and carrots are especially beneficial when it comes to your oral health because they are loaded with nutrients and their crunchy consistency helps remove debris from your teeth.
3. Rinse with an Antimicrobial Mouthwash
In addition to brushing for a full two minutes each morning and evening and flossing daily, you should rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash consistently. Although it usually only takes 30-60 seconds to complete this step of your oral hygiene regimen, it can go a long way when it comes to preventing plaque buildup, gum disease, and bad breath!
4. Quit Unhealthy Dental Habits
Over the years, have you adopted an unhealthy habit or two? Whether it’s biting your nails, chewing on ice cubes, or smoking, it’s important to put a plan in place to quit, especially since behaviors like these dramatically increase your chances of experiencing a serious dental injury. If you’ve tried quitting in the past but haven’t had any success, don’t hesitate to ask your dentist or doctor for their advice!
5. Get a Dental Checkup and Cleaning Twice a Year
Even if you consistently brush and floss at home, you need to visit your dentist twice a year. That way, they can conduct a thorough oral exam, checking for problems like tooth decay and gum disease in the process. Furthermore, their team can use special tools to gently remove food particles and plaque from the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth.
