Do you know what September 29th is? It’s National Coffee Day! Coffee lovers all across the United States are probably jumping with joy, excited for all the free beverages and special deals to come. For most adults, there’s nothing better than a delicious warm cup of joe to start your morning. Some might even reach for a second cup for a boost during that afternoon slump! Unfortunately, frequent consumption can negatively affect your oral health if you’re not careful. Here’s how to celebrate National Coffee Day while keeping your smile healthy.

What Is the History Behind National Coffee Day?

Europe

The history of coffee can be traced back to 15th century Yemen. Europeans got their first taste about 100 years later – and it wasn’t a smooth ride. Some people reacted poorly to the beverage, resulting in its condemnation by a local clergy. Luckily, Pope Clement VIII saved the day! He tasted the drink and enjoyed it so much he gave it papal approval. Thus, mainland Europe’s first official coffeehouse opened in Venice around 1645.

United States

Americans got their first taste of coffee after the Boston Tea Party in 1773. When the colonies revolted against King George III’s tea tax, they swapped out tea for coffee. In the mid-1800s, the caffeinated beverage was introduced to others around the country, and it began to increase in popularity. Several brands entered the coffee market, growing into the 45.4-billion-dollar industry we know today.

How Does Coffee Affect Your Oral Health?

Coffee can affect your oral health in several different ways! It contains polyphenols that keep your teeth healthy and strong by breaking down plaque-causing bacteria. Also, one study found that people who drink one cup a day are 12% less likely to die from cancer, stroke, diabetes, or heart, kidney, and respiratory diseases. Unfortunately, the drink can also have negative effects on your smile. It can stain your teeth, cause bad breath, dry out your mouth, and weaken your teeth. Frequent consumption can also increase your risk of cavities, decay, and enamel erosion.

Tips to Keep Your Smile Healthy During National Coffee Day

Are you excited about National Coffee Day? Here’s how to celebrate while keeping your smile safe:

  • Drink your coffee all at once. Sipping increases the amount of contact that coffee has with your teeth. When you’re finished, rinse your mouth with water and brush your teeth.
  • Use a straw. It helps minimize exposure to your teeth.
  • Limit the amount of added sugar. Adding sugar and flavored syrups to your coffee can further increase your risk of cavities and decay.
  • Eat fruits and veggies. The fibers naturally scrub your teeth, so snacking on them throughout the day will keep your smile bright and clean!
  • Practice good oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing your teeth after a cup of coffee can help reduce staining and discoloration. Make sure you wait at least 30 minutes after finishing your drink!

As you can see, there are many ways you can celebrate National Coffee Day while keeping your smile healthy. Now you’re armed and ready to partake in all the celebrations!
